EARTH SUMMIT NETWORK AN OUTLINE What is it ? In 1992, at the time of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, various environment and development organizations, mainly in the Chicago area, came together as a network called the Midwest Earth Summit Network, to organize around issues concerning the Earth Summit. In 2006, this is being revived as the Earth Summit Network, to organize around global issues, and to form and sustain a local, national and global network of organizations and activities. Objectives To focus on globalization – economic, social, political, and trade issues To focus on environmental issues and those relating to natural resources To focus on the strategies for and effects of the progress of nations at all levels of economic success To conduct programs and activities that will: o Rejuvenate the planet, and help transform all human activities to make the progress sustainable o Encourage democratic forms of progress that empower and benefit all o Encourage broader and deeper forms of democracy at the local, national and international levels o Encourage more responsible behavior by persons towards self, community, nation, global society, other species and the planet To organize global networks that will focus on the above issues and activities Perspectives The world faces major challenges in many spheres of global life – environmental, political, social, developmental, economic, financial, and security. In these spheres, many of the problems have been created by the model of progress that global civilization has adopted that is destructive to natural resources, human and social “capital”, and true economic welfare, as well as has proceeded to concentrate power, encouraged fragmented versus holistic knowledge, and has attempted to go beyond the finite limits of the planet. On one side, the world needs major global programs to repair the damage, and on the other, it needs to alter the direction of progress to more beneficial and healthy directions. The Earth Summit Network will take up efforts in both these areas, so as to form an active and effective global movement, that links and coordinates with local, regional and national activities.
